Where is San Miguel?

Where is San Miguel?

The Municipality of San Miguel is part of the first district of Leyte in Eastern Visayas, or Region 8.  When you look at the map of Leyte, you will find it on the north-eastern side, in between Carigara which is Leyte’s old center, and Tacloban, its modern capital.

San Miguel is relatively close to Samar, so Waray is the prevalent spoken language in the town. Tacloban City, the capital of the Province of Leyte and where the airport is located, is only 40 minutes away. Although it shares a land boundary with Tacloban, the national highway from Tacloban to San Miguel will take you through the Municipalities of Palo, then the Municipality of Alangalang, instead of directly to San Miguel.

Although its town center is surrounded by vast plains and its eastern boundary a massive timberland, San Miguel is not really in the middle of nowhere. In fact, it is easy to situate the municipality by putting it in the geographical context of significant historical events in the Province of Leyte.

San Miguel is only one town away from the MacArthur Landing Memorial Park in the town Palo, where General Douglas MacArthur landed in 1944 in what was considered as the biggest battle in world naval history, cementing the Allied Forces’ hold over the Asia-Pacific during World War II.

It is one town away from the bustling town of Carigara, the first town to be established in Eastern Visayas and is considered the first provincial capital of the Leyte-Samar single province in 1735 when the two islands ceased to be part of the Cebu Province. (Leyte and Samar were split into two separate provinces only in 1768.)

San Miguel is less than 40 kilometers away from the Tacloban’s old Provincial Capitol Building, which served briefly as the seat of National Government during the Commonwealth Period and where President Sergio Osmeña was sworn into office.

Ormoc City, a major gateway to other islands because of its port, is four towns away from San Miguel, or about one hour and a half drive.

San Miguel is one hour or 44 kilometers away from the famous San Juanico Bridge connecting Leyte and Samar.

Whether you are coming to the Province of Leyte through Ormoc City in the west or Tacloban City in the eastern seaboard, the Municipality of San Miguel is easily accessible by public transportation.
